The outbreak of war between European nations was the result of several factors: This would increase German influence in the world and likely allow the country to expand its colonial holdings. Russia was rebuilding and modernizing its large army and had begun a program of industrialization.
Each class is uniquely comprised of students with varying educational abilities and cultural backgrounds. To analyze my impact on student learning I used work from an 8th grade social studies class that Exploring the causes and effects of world war i 25 students, ranging from years of age.
The curriculum as a whole covered North Carolina history in the context of US history; however, the unit being assessed during this evaluation was WWI and the Roaring 20s. Due to the range of abilities present in this class, assignments for low performing students were modified, providing printouts of PowerPoint slides, 1: I chose to focus my assignment on the three students who were interested in the causes of the war as well as the alliances made throughout WWI.
Looking over KWL charts of the class, my PowerPoint was adapted to cover the majority of questions students were interested in learning. Informed Instructional Plans In creating my unit on WWI, I the goals for my students consisted of learning the causes of the war, as well as its cultural effects on the United States through writing.
I like to view history as a long story with developing plots, climaxes and resolutions because it makes history come alive through its relevance. It also helps students comprehend the significance of huge, global events throughout time and realize the impact of such events on society; therefore, my final assessment for WWI was the development and creation of two letters.
One letter took the perspective of a soldier fighting in the war, while the other took the perspective of an American living in the US and experiencing cultural changes due to the war. By creating this letter, students recognized that any historical event as large as a World War significantly alters society forever.
As we focused on the causes of WWI the first instructional day of this unit, we set the foundation to understand how the war changed culture and society in the context of North Carolina and the US as a whole.
My goals for this unit came from the understanding that writing to learn is a research based practice that develops literacy, content knowledge and critical thinking; I wanted students to use writing to understand the cultural impact of WWI globally, as well as locally in the US and North Carolina.
The WWI unit was combined with a unit on the Roaring 20s so for two days, the first half of class was spent with me directly teaching through the use of a PowerPoint presentation on WWI to create an interactive classroom discussion, while the students followed along with guided notes.
The second half of class, students spent time gathering information for their formal presentation on the Roaring 20s with their collaborative teams.
The first day of direct teaching on the war, we spent thirty minutes covering the causes of World War I and the causes of US involvement as students filled out their guided notes and actively participated in our classroom discussion.
The remainder of the class, as mentioned above, was spent with the students engaging in self-guided research for their topic of the s.
This direct teaching was also done through an interactive classroom discussion, using a continuation of the PowerPoint presentation. Through direct teaching of information on the First World War, the students were then able to make sense of these facts by completing a letter outline the following day.
The next class period was spent preparing their outline, which was to be used on their final letter assessment. The outline was front and back, providing prompts for the students to respond to and specific topics of the war to focus their letter upon.
In preparation to begin the outline, we had a class discussion about voice and the importance of perspective in writing. We also had a discussion about the real-world application of letter writing in regards to history.
Letters are often used in the scholarly world as primary documents to study and develop the historical progression of a time period. Using writing to assess and develop historical understandings of the war crosses the Social Studies and English Language Arts curriculum together and allows a creative opportunity for students to show their knowledge of the perspective topic.
Assessment The writing process consists of brainstorming, drafting, writing, editing and publication. Therefore, there were several parts to my assessment of student knowledge from WWI.
Because the unit was developed over many days, there were five artifacts used to assess student learning.
To pre-assess student knowledge, a KWL chart was used, as mentioned before. In addition to the incomplete and complete KWL charts, the students had guided notes from the direct teaching of my PowerPoint and our interactive classroom discussions. The completion of this activity set the students up for successful assessments following the two days of direct instruction, as students filled out their letter outlines.
As the class was working, I frequently told students: The majority of my students had both the guided notes as well as the outline fully detailed and completed. Although the students did not have an opportunity for editing and publication of their letters, they were able to set themselves up for strong writing through the use of guided notes and an outline which served as the brainstorming and drafting part of the writing process.
As students prepared their outlines, I spent the entire class period walking around to conference and monitor with students to check for understanding and answer any lingering questions on WWI.
As mentioned before, many students included their desire to know the causes of WWI in their initial KWL Charts and it was clear through their letter assessments that the majority of our class understood and comprehended the ideas of alliances, imperialism, militarism and nationalism and their correlation to the start of World War I, showing an improvement and impact on student learning.
The graph below plots the test scores of each child in my 6th period class from their letter assessment. The high number of passing grades showed that there was a positive impact on student learning with all but one student making a C or better for their final letter assessment: Analysis of Student Work Student One: Student One is a very sweet, calm child in class; yet, poses as an instructional challenge due to his pace of learning.
